Description

John A. Logan Memorial

Freemason, Union Army General, Senator, nicknamed "Black Eagle" or "Black Jack"

At the top (facing South) is an equestrian statue of General Logan, with his sword drawn.

Below the General is the statue of "War," personified as the Goddess Pallas Athena. She is portrayed leaning on her sword and holding in her left hand, the shield of her father, Zeus. It bears the image of Medusa, the most well known of the Three Gorgon Sisters. Legend says that Hermes attached the face of Medusa to the shield after the head was presented to Athena, by Perseus.

This shield is one of the most common and prolific esoteric symbols seen through out the city.

Opposite "War,"facing North is "Peace," personified as the Greek Goddess Eirene. Her left hand holds the top of a large fasci, gripping a pole, from which the axe head has been removed. In her right hand is an olive wreath and an olive crown adorns her head. The olive tree is scared to the Goddess Athena and is an internationally recognized symbol of peace.

The East pedestal depits Vice President Chester Arthur, administering the senatorial oath to Logan. The West side shows, Logan, leading a council of war.
