Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain


Columbus, centered behind the winged allegorical figure of Discovery on the ship's phallic designed prow. Four eagles and a globe bearing the outline of the western hemisphere reside at the top of the monument.

The elderly man, who represents the Old World, faces east.
An American Indian woman representing the New World, faces west. To the side of each of them are statues of lion guardians.

Behind the monument are thee flagpoles which represent Columbus' three ships. On top of each pole is a sphere with an eagle perched on top.

On the back of the monument is a likeness of Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain and the words:
TO THE MEMORY OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WHOSE HIGH FAITH AND INDOMITABLE COURAGE GAVE TO MANKIND A NEW WORLD
BORN MCDXXXVI DIED MDIV
(1436 - 1504)

In the back round, the "Progress of Railroading" can be seen atop Union Station.
